Product
Definition
Index set $I$와 category $\mathcal{C}$가 주어졌다고 하자. 이 때 $\mathcal{C}$의 objects의 collection $\{X_i\}_{i\in I}$에 대하여 product라는 것은, 아래의 commutative diagram을 만족시키는 collection of morphisms $\{\pi_i:X\longrightarrow X_i\}_{i\in I}$를 갖고 있는 object $X$이다.
임의의 collection of morphisms $\{f_i:Y\longrightarrow X_i\}_{i\in I}$가 주어질 때마다 unique morphism $f:Y\longrightarrow X$가 있어서 아래의 commutative diagram을 만족시킨다.
이 때 주의할 점은 $f$는 indexing $i\in I$마다 있는게 아니라 collection of morphisms마다 유니크하게 있다는 것이다.
기호로는 $$\bigg(\prod_{i\in I}X_i,(\pi:\prod_{i\in I}X_i\longrightarrow X_i)\bigg)$$로 쓴다.
Representablity and Universal property
$$ X\mapsto\prod_{i\in I}Hom_{\mathtt{SETS}}(X,X_i) $$
$$ Hom_{\mathcal{C}}(Y,\prod_{i\in I}X_i)\cong \prod_{i\in I} Hom_{\mathcal{C}}(Y,X_i) $$
which is natural in $Y.$
즉, 임의의 collection of morphisms $(f_i:Y\longrightarrow X_i)_{i\in I}\in\prod_{i\in I}Hom_{\mathcal{C}}(Y,X_i)$는 canonical morphisms $(\pi:\prod_{i\in I}\longrightarrow X_i)$로부터 모두 얻어질 수 있음을 뜻한다.
Terminal object
product는 terminal object이다. category $\mathcal{C}$에서 $T\in\mathcal{C}$가 주어졌을 때, 임의의 object $X\in\mathcal{C}$마다 오직 하나의 morphism $X\longrightarrow T$만이 존재하면 $T$를 terminal object라고 부른다. $\{X_i\}_{i\in I}$의 product는 limit의 한 종류이고, limit이 category of cones에서 terminal object이기 때문에 product도 어떤 의미에서는 terminal이라 할 수 있다.
Coproduct
Definition
Index set $I$와 category $\mathcal{C}$가 주어져 있다고 하자. Collection of objects $\{X_i\}_{i\in I}$의 coproduct라는 것은 object $X$ together with a collection of morphisms $\{\iota_i:X_i\longrightarrow X\}$가 다음을 만족할 때이다.
임의의 collection of morphisms $\{g_i:X_i\longrightarrow Y\}_{i\in I}$가 주어질 때마다 unique morphism $g:X\longrightarrow Y$가 있어서 다음의 commutative diagram을 만족시킨다.
이 때의 $X$는 $\coprod_{i\in I}X_i$ 혹은 $\oplus_{i\in I}X_i$로 표기한다.
Representablity and Universal property
Initial object
Examples
Category of abelian groups
category of abelian groups를 $\mathtt{AB}$라고 하자. $\mathtt{AB}$의 collection of abelian groups $\{A_i\}_{i\in I}$에 대하여 product와 coproduct는 각각 무엇일까?
$\{A_i\}_{i\in I}$의 catesian product $\prod_{i\in I}A_i$위에 component-wise operation을 정의해주면 자연스럽게 abelian group이 된다. 이 abelian group은 각 $i\in I$마다 $i$-th projection $\pi_i:\prod_{i\in I}A_i\longrightarrow A_i$을 갖고 있다. $\bigg(\prod_{i\in I}A_i, (\pi_i:\prod_{i\in I}A_i\longrightarrow A_i)\bigg)$은 실제로 product가 갖는 universal property를 만족시키므로 이는 $\mathtt{AB}$에서의 categorical product이다.
$\{A_i\}_{i\in I}$의 coproduct는 $\{A_i\}_{i\in I}$의 direct sum $\oplus_{i\in I}A_i$이다.
Category of topological spaces
category of topological spaces를 $\mathtt{TOP}$라 하자. collection of topological spaces $\{X_i\}_{i\in I}$의 product는 무엇일까?
